Will a natural pool attract mosquitoes or bugs?
Nope. A properly designed natural pool keeps the water circulating and balanced, which actually discourages mosquito breeding. In fact, natural pools support a healthy ecosystem, so frogs and dragonflies do their part to keep mosquitoes and bugs at bay.
This is the first question almost everyone in Bali asks, and it deserves a proper answer rather than reassurance.
Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. They need a still surface to lay on and undisturbed water for larvae to develop in. A natural pool offers neither: water moves continuously between the swimming zone and the regeneration zone, and that circulation alone makes the surface unsuitable for egg-laying.
The second line of defence is biological. Within a season or so, an established regeneration zone attracts dragonflies and damselflies — both voracious larvae predators — along with frogs at the planted margins. You end up with a small ecosystem that actively hunts the thing you were worried about. Conventional pools have no equivalent; they rely entirely on chemistry.
In practice, the mosquito risk on a Bali property is rarely the pool at all. It is the saucer under a potted plant, a blocked gutter, an old bucket behind the shed, a tarpaulin holding rainwater. A well-run natural pool is one of the least hospitable places on your land for mosquitoes.
What does matter is upkeep. Keep the circulation running — a pump switched off for days in the wet season is the one scenario that changes the answer. Clear leaf litter from skimmers so flow isn’t restricted. And after heavy rain, take ten minutes to tip out standing water around the garden.
Do that, and mosquitoes are a non-issue. Skip it for weeks at a time, and any body of water on the island will eventually cause you trouble.
