Natural Pools in Uluwatu: What Works Here, and Why
The Bukit doesn’t feel like the rest of Bali. That’s most of the appeal.
Drier. Windier. Harder light, bigger horizon. You’re above everything, looking at ocean instead of trees.
Getting anywhere takes long enough that people who live here mostly decided not to bother. Padang Padang, Bingin and Impossibles are down the cliff. The temple is up the road. Nothing is convenient, and nobody who chose Uluwatu is surprised.
It doesn’t feel like the rest of Bali because geologically it isn’t. The Bukit is uplifted coral reef — limestone, not volcano.
Which turns out to matter a lot when you dig a hole.
The pool that suits a clifftop
Up here the view does the work. A pool just needs to not compete with it.
Low profile. Natural materials. Colour taken from the ground rather than a tile catalogue.
What makes an Uluwatu pool special isn’t scale — it’s the sense that it was already there. A rock pool that filled up, rather than a rectangle someone poured.
There’s a nice bit of honesty available here that isn’t available anywhere else on the island. The ground you’re cutting into is fossil reef. Build a reef-form pool in reef rock and it isn’t a stylistic reference. It’s the same material, a few million years apart.
Also plan for wind and sun. The Bukit is exposed. A courtyard or partly sheltered pool holds temperature better, loses far less to evaporation, and is simply nicer to sit beside at four in the afternoon.
Why a natural pool earns its keep here
Water on the Bukit is expensive and hard to get. That’s not a slogan — it’s the defining fact of living up here.
In Pecatu, boreholes reportedly have to reach 225 to 250 metres before they produce water. Households buy tankered water at around Rp 300,000 per 5,000 litres, two or three tankers a week.
PDAM raised supply to Kuta Selatan to 750 litres a second in 2024, against an ideal requirement of 2,000. Some properties gave up and installed seawater desalination.
Now price a conventional pool against that. It gets drained and refilled every few years. Refilling 40,000 litres is eight tankers — before the dry-season top-ups evaporation demands.
A natural pool is never drained.
Over a decade on the Bukit, that isn’t an environmental talking point. It’s a line item.
Three designs that work here
Coral Cove — reef-inspired, coral-toned interior, shells set into the finish. On the Bukit this is the site-honest choice, for the reason above.
The Oasis — courtyard pool in blush, sand and terracotta. Shelters the water, cuts evaporation, and makes sense of a landscape that has always been about scarcity.
Lagoon Luxe — resort scale with shallow beach entry, for the clifftop villas the Bukit specialises in. Pair it with rainwater capture and the maths works.
Two things that cost money if you find out late
You’re not digging, you’re breaking. Limestone here tests as rock, not soil. Budget hydraulic breaking and a longer excavation programme. Anyone quoting Canggu digging rates for an Uluwatu site hasn’t understood the site — and that gap turns up as a variation later.
Recharge pits usually don’t belong here. This is the one place on the island where our normal answer flips.
On volcanic ground, putting clean water back into the aquifer is straightforwardly good. In karst it isn’t — and Indonesian regulation has already made that call.
So the Bukit default is the opposite: capture and store rainwater rather than infiltrate it, and keep the cliff edge dry. If your site is well back from any crest we’ll look at infiltration properly. Before you brief anyone
- Sort your water supply before you size the pool, not after.
- Get a geological assessment. On karst that isn’t optional.
- Establish your distance from the cliff crest. Fifteen metres minimum, more if the rock is poor.
- Plan rainwater capture. On the Bukit the cheapest water you’ll ever get is what lands on your roof.

One honest gap: no rainfall normal measured on the Bukit itself appears to exist. Ngurah Rai, at the neck of the peninsula, recorded 1,589.7mm in 2018 against 2,496mm at Negara in the west — the Bukit is clearly drier, but nobody publishes a Bukit figure.
