Where We Build: Natural Pools Across Bali

Bali is not one place geologically. What sits under your site — volcanic tuff, coastal alluvium or uplifted limestone — changes what a natural pool costs, how it's built, and whether it can give water back.

Three sites, three completely different problems.

A plot in Canggu sits on young volcanic ground with the water table five to twenty metres down and the sea creeping inland through the aquifer. A plot in Ubud sits on a 29,000-year-old ignimbrite sheet, sometimes a hundred metres thick, cut by gorges that drain the whole landscape. A plot in Uluwatu sits on uplifted coral reef — limestone so hard your excavator gives up and so porous that whatever you put into it reaches the groundwater in hours.

Those differences aren’t academic. They decide how you dig, how you line, whether an aquifer recharge pit is a gift to the island or a liability, and which design will actually look like it belongs.
