Sunset Sink

A reflective, minimalist pool that captures the sky, especially dramatic at sunset. With dark lava stone tiles, this pool is a pond for reflection and rejuvenation.

The idea

Sunset Sink is the quietest design in the collection and the most graphic. A simple rectilinear form, dark lava stone throughout, and a water line brought as close to the deck as it can go — so the surface behaves like a mirror rather than a pool.

The dark interior is doing specific work. It kills the turquoise entirely, absorbs light rather than scattering it, and turns the water into a reflecting plane that holds whatever the sky is doing. At sunset the whole surface goes copper.

How the filtration sits

Minimalism and biology need careful reconciliation. The regeneration zone here is usually moved off the main axis — set behind a wall, below the deck line, or handled as a separate planted basin — so the swimming surface stays uninterrupted. It’s more construction work than an integrated planted edge, and it’s the trade you make for the clean line.

Where it works

Contemporary architecture, flat open sites with a west or northwest aspect, and owners who want the pool to be an object rather than a landscape. It photographs extremely well, which matters if the property is let.

Worth knowing

Dark stone absorbs heat, so the water runs warmer than a pale pool — pleasant in the evening, less refreshing at midday. Reflective surfaces also show every leaf. This design rewards a site with less overhanging planting than most of Bali offers.
