What's the difference between a natural pool and a chlorine pool?
One kills things; the other removes what they eat. A chlorine pool sterilises the water chemically. A natural pool uses a planted regeneration zone and a gravel bed to strip out the nutrients that algae and bacteria need to grow.
How the water is cleaned. Chlorine is a biocide — it kills organisms in the water and needs constant topping up as sunlight and swimmers consume it. A natural pool takes the nutrients away instead. Plants and the microbes living on the gravel absorb the nitrogen and phosphorus that would otherwise feed algae, so nothing has anything to grow on.
How it feels. No stinging eyes, no chemical smell, no bleached swimwear, no dry skin afterwards. This is the difference people notice within about thirty seconds of getting in.
What it costs to run. No chlorine, acid or stabiliser purchases, ever. No annual drain-and-refill. Against that, the planted zone needs seasonal attention — closer to gardening than chemistry.
What it needs from your site. This is the real trade-off. A natural pool needs roughly 30–50% more area than the swimming surface alone, because the regeneration zone has to go somewhere. On a tight site, that is the deciding factor.
How it looks. A chlorine pool looks like a pool. A natural pool can look like anything from a wild planted spring to a crisp dark rectangle — the filtration can be integrated or hidden entirely.
What stays the same. Both need circulation, both need maintenance, and both are bodies of water that require the same supervision around children.
